Psiphon’s Android app provides the most choice with 27 VPN server locations in total and the iOS app has 25. The number of Psiphon VPN servers available depends on the app you’re using. It’s a good option for torrenting, has a private logging policy, and secure encryption. The fastest free VPN we’ve reviewed is AtlasVPN. Put simply, Psiphon Free Proxy is too slow to use for almost anything. These speeds are of the slowest out of the 56 VPNs we’ve reviewed. It’s clear from looking at these results that Psiphon throttles its free proxy servers. In our tests, we measured a speed loss of 95% when connected to our nearest server in the UK.
Psiphon Free is extremely slow, even for a free proxy service. So if you’re only looking to unblock censored sites, slow speeds shouldn’t be too much of an issue. Psiphon isn’t intended to be used for HD streaming, torrenting, or gaming. While the apps for Android and iOS allow you to choose from around 20 server locations, they throttle proxy speeds to just 2Mbps and only offer proxy mode. Of course, you may get better speeds if Psiphon connects you to a nearby VPN server, but this isn’t guaranteed. There are free VPNs like PrivadoVPN Free and Proton VPN Free that have recorded speeds more than 10 times faster than Psiphon in our tests. These are very slow, especially considering the price of a monthly subscription. With a speed boost, we registered speeds of around 4Mbps for uploads and 4Mbps for downloads. In our speed tests, we weren’t able to choose a country server in VPN mode. If you need a free VPN for use in a highly-censored region, we recommend Windscribe Free instead.
